Objective To evaluate the clinical value of serum S100B protein in children with epilepsy. Methods 208 children with epilepsy, including 87 cases of generalized seizures and 121 cases of partial seizures, and 135 health children( physical examination) in our hospital from Feb. 2010 to Mar. 2013 were recruited. The serum levels of S100B on different time points(tI =4 h,t2 =24 h) were tested by ELISA. Results The serum S100B in the control group demon- strated skewed distribution with negative correlation of age. The S100B serum level in the experiment group at t1 was much higher than that in the control group( P 〈 0.05 ) , and in generalized seizures group was significant higher than that in partial seizures group( P 〈0.05 ) ;The serum S100B level in the experiment group at t2 was significant decreased compared with that at t1 (P 〈 0.05 ) , there was no statistical difference between generalized seizures group and partial seizures group ( P 〉 0.05 ). Conclusion The obviously nerve damage can be found in the early stage of epilepsy seizures, which is correlated with the type of seizures. The serum S100B level can be used as a sensitivity index for the evaluation of the nerve damage in children with epilepsy.
